1. Create a Daily Routine
Students need routine. It helps them feel more comfortable and prepares them for what’s ahead. Without routine, things can get confusing and stressful.
Because many traditional classrooms were converted to online learning, many routines were also forfeited. Although teaching online is much different, do try to create a daily routine for yourself and your students. Students should know exactly when assignments are due, what the agenda for each day is, and so on.
2. Eliminate Distractions
How can you eliminate distractions when you’re not physically with the students? To add to the difficulty of the matter, each student is located in a different place with their own unique distractions. So, how do you handle this and ensure you have all your students’ attention?
Do your best to help each student eliminate any distractions around them. Suggest they find a quiet room in the home or wear noise-canceling headphones. You can also use a variety of online tools to help you keep track of your students’ activities.
3. Give Clear Instructions
When you were teaching in a physical classroom, you had to give clear instructions for assignments, daily tasks, and more. You must now be even more clear on instructions for your remote students. Be as simple and direct with your instructions as possible.
Find ways to simplify tasks or assignments, not to make the work easier, but to help with understanding. It’s also a good idea to have your instructions written down for students to view as you’re reading them out loud and to review afterward. A good tip is to use short and simple sentences with bullet points where possible.
Be open and ready to answer questions as well.
4. Give and Ask for Feedback
Your students are adjusting to this new type of learning just as you are. It’s important to offer feedback to them when available. Let them know how they’re doing with their online work.
